You Gotta Be Soft, Man
July 13, 2008
UPS is a hard fucking job, ain’t no way around it. Loading and sorting heavy ass packages all day, not fun. For 22.3s (an article in the contract allowing people to become full time workers) are guaranteed within the contract (and local provisions as well as past practices, i.e. contract clarifying practices) to have one soft job and one hard job. So if you are a 22.3 you will have a hard job on the Twilight Shift and a soft job on the Night Shift (or vis-versa).
This is due to the fact that management and the union came into agreement that working a hard job for eight hours straight was improbable and therefore there needed to be a soft job added in there. So management and the union come up with a list of hard jobs and soft jobs that are decided upon by seniority.
But, it appears that on the Twilight Shift some of the 22.3s are being forced to work hard jobs when they’re supposed to be doing soft jobs for the shift. One of them confronted Wayne, the Twilight manager about this and Wayne said that he was allowed to force them to work hard jobs.
I’ll be going to the union to find out if this is true, and if it ain’t (which I”m pretty sure it’s not) than I’ll have to inform Wayne and/or file a mass grievance on behalf of the 22.3 workers.
